To Set Visible Edges Option for Referenced Models

In this scenario, you referenced several models into a drawing model. By default, the Visible Edges option for each reference is set to Dynamic. This means that if you change the referenced models at their source, the changes appear immediately in the reference attachments.

To improve performance you want to cache the views. If you have a large number of referenced models, and you want to alter all their Visible Edges reference properties simultaneously, it is recommended you use the available Visible Edges Tools.

  1. From the Common Tools tab, click the References tool icon. The References dialog opens. Your referenced models are listed. The Visible Edges option by default is set to Dynamic for each reference.
  2. Select (Cache). The References dialog refreshes, and the Visible Edges option changes to Cached for each reference.
  3. In the References dialog click on one of the referenced models, and select right-click > Exchange menu option. The referenced model's source DGN opens.
  4. Make a change to the model.
  5. In the Manage View Groups window, click (Previous Model) icon. The DGN where you referenced your models reopens. There are several indications that your cached views are out of date:
    • References dialog - The modified model Visible Edge option is displayed in red, and its Status property displays a pencil icon. Hovering the pointer over the pencil icon displays a message "Visible Edges Cache is out of date"
    • Status bar - Located at the bottom right corner of the application window, the Cached Visible Edges Status indicator displays an exclamation character (!) icon. Also, a tool tip appears emanating from the Status Bar which indicates "Outdated information might be displayed....".

If you have a large amount of referenced models and have made changes to a significant number of them, you can "re-cache" them in one step.

  6. Select (Synchronize). The References dialog refreshes, and the Visible Edges option changes to Cached for each reference.

You can also make all the referenced models be up-to-date at all times in one step.

  7. Select (Dynamic). The References dialog refreshes, and the Visible Edges option changes to Dynamic for each reference.

Although all the references have their Visible Edges option set to Dynamic, the modeled graphics do not get refreshed.

  8. Select (Reload). All referenced models are reread and redrawn in your drawing model.
